my grandma's fountain pen | sketching with a vintage Montblanc
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.8 месяцев назад
Today I'd like to show you a small pen set that once belonged to my grandmother. For me it's very special because of the stories and memories connected to it, even if I don't use the pens a lot. The fountain pen is a Montblanc 22 - it has a piston mechanism with a blue ink window lined with gold that can be refilled directly from an ink well. The 14 K gold tip is nice and has a fine to medium l...

keep it simple | tips for a stress free sketchbook practice
Просмотров 3,6 тыс.10 месяцев назад
One thing I've noticed about my own sketching activities, but also in comments that you readers and viewers send in, is that whenever I make sketching too complicated, I'm less motivated to do it. I think we are less likely to keep sketching when we start to see it as a kind of obligation, or a duty, thinking we need to draw something every single day without fail or were not doing it right. In this video I give you a simple guide on how you can learn to draw anything. Thank you for this very valuable video which is up to date more than ever. I started an instagram account 6 weeks ago to show my creative work for my small business and already feel it sucking me in. So much time I spend on content creation. Its still fun, but I want to focus on my creativity and not on making content. This video helps me to not take IG so serious and fokus on what I love. ❤

      @NatureSketchbook 6 дней назад

      I think these days starting an IG is not even worth it anymore because it will not show your art to lots of people anyway and there are tons of ads, bots and AI slop. There are less frustrating alternatives like Mastodon or Cara you can try out, but as you say, focus on your creativity first! ❤️

    Yiiii... I grew up with over 1200 different shaped iris in a rainbow of colors (no red though) growing in rows like tomatoes and I STILL have trouble with them.

    Thank you for the informative video. I love Sketch Inks, but wondering why they don't offer neutral Sepia color. "Ruby" and "Lilly" are great but skew Red or Green. Sometimes just want to grab a neutral brown without mixing.

    • @NatureSketchbook
      @NatureSketchbook 7 дней назад

      I think they do have a very dark brown color, but it's rather muted and cool. Since this video I've switched from Sketch Inks to De Atramentis and Octopus Write + Draw, since the Sketch Inks had lightfastness issues for me.

    • @JO--Art
      @JO--Art 7 дней назад

      @@NatureSketchbook Wow. That's really unfortunate about the lightfast issues. Will look more into those other brands. Thank you for the heads up.

    • @NatureSketchbook
      @NatureSketchbook 6 дней назад

      @@JO--Art I was a bit disappointed too, but then I found they don't say anything about lightfastness on the ink bottles. The other inks are twice the price, but I know many sketchers who are happy with them, at least the De Atramentis (the ones that can go into fountain pens are called Document Ink).

    • @JO--Art
      @JO--Art 6 дней назад

      @@NatureSketchbook Thanks again for this info. Yes, very disappointing since I have many of their colors. I'm going to look into De Atramentis. I read on someone's blog (I'm still trying to find again) that some of their colors faded, but not too many. The browns and blacks all held up. Think I'll stick with those colors (when it comes to ink) At least watercolors list pigments (easier to know for sure). The Octopus inks look beautiful, but read somewhere that they're not easy to mix.

    I would recommend mixing the gouache with equal parts blending medium and it smooths out the gouache and makes it semi moist. When it does dry it’s smooth and creamy when you rewet .

    Thank you for addressing this important topic. I am a watercolor teacher, and I walk my beginning students through a series of basic techniques (always emphasizing that there are multiple ways to do anything) and encouraging intermediate students to apply these techniques to their painting practice. My main job is to ensure students that their work is good, that they aren't doomed, and to calm their desire to invent draconian rules around art. I often talk about the importance of experimentation and play, and I have had several retired students who have forgotten how to do this due to a lifetime of responsibility. Students become very anxious if they think their picture is ugly. (I regularly joke that there's no art police and their work is better than they think.) I encourage them to practice these techniques repeatedly, but many get bored or impatient and want a magic trick to suddenly create fully developed pictures without spending time practicing. Learning something new is a big challenge, but it's worth the effort.

    I use FB to advance my brand of politics because I am a writer, furthermore keeping in contact with family and friends. I don't promote my business as an Engineer on Social Media at all for two reasons: first I do not stuggle to find work, and secondly because my B2B communication is guaranteed to be confidential. Your absolutely correct Julia, there is a dissatifaction and sapping of creativity and valuable time that comes with X, Instagram, and FB, that said, there's really not much more I can add-I can't rely on these platforms for anything...I need to learn about who I'm friends with and even more who will instruct me. I'm glad you continued to reach out to me Julia. Blessing.

    This is exactly what I needed. I know the point of these videos is that it takes time and it's not some sort of "instantly get better" quick fix, but after following the video and not much more than 30 minutes of practice my drawings look so much better. This is not to say i'm magically an artist, they are still basic but compared to what I was drawing before anyone could notice the clear difference. The segments about basic shapes and then refining them was clearly explained, and something I'd never understood about "under-drawings" before. Thank you so much for this video!
